I am Betrothed!

The Best Engagement Ever...

In ancient times, betrothal was a serious and significant part of the marriage process. It wasn’t just a casual engagement, like we often think of today, but a formal arrangement that marked the beginning of a marital relationship. Betrothal was legally binding, even though the couple did not live together or consummate the marriage immediately. This arrangement was often initiated by the groom’s family, who would offer a bride price to the bride's family as part of the commitment. There would be a public ceremony to affirm the betrothal, and the groom would then go away to prepare a place for his bride.

Can you imagine what that would feel like? The groom preparing a home, a space, just for his bride? It’s like he’s getting everything ready for a new life together.

Now, let’s shift gears a bit. The Bible often uses the concept of betrothal to describe the
relationship between Christ and the Church, His bride. Jesus Himself, as the Bridegroom, has chosen us, His Church, to be betrothed to Him. This imagery is used throughout the New Testament to describe how believers, both men and women, are in a sacred and binding engagement to Christ.

In Ephesians 5:25-27, Paul compares the relationship between Christ and the Church to that of a husband and wife. He writes,
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.” In this sense, Christ is not only the Groom, but also the one preparing His bride—His Church—by making her holy and pure.

Are you ready?!

Can you see how this betrothal imagery paints a beautiful picture of love, commitment, and transformation? Christ is making preparations for us—His bride—just as the groom would go and prepare a place for his bride. John 14:2-3 reminds us of this, where Jesus says,
“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” He is making arrangements for us, His bride, to be with Him forever.

This is such a powerful reminder that we are not just casually waiting for Christ’s return—we are betrothed to Him! And as believers, we should be excited about this! As the bride in an ancient betrothal, the Church is eagerly anticipating the moment when Christ returns to take us to Himself. In 2 Corinthians 11:2, Paul says,
“I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.” He’s describing how we, as the Church, are promised to Christ, and we should be excited, pure, and ready for that day.

So, here’s a question for you to think about: how are you preparing for your “wedding” day with Christ? Are you excited? Are you living in a way that honors this betrothal? Just as the bride eagerly waits for her wedding day, we, too, should be eagerly waiting for Christ’s return.

In Revelation 19:7, it says,
“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.” There’s coming a day when we, as the bride, will be united with Christ forever, and it will be a day of immense joy and celebration.

So, let’s celebrate and look forward to that glorious day when Christ returns to take His bride, the Church, to be with Him forever. The marriage of the Lamb is coming, and what a celebration that will be! Hallelujah!
